‘ASILI’ is a Swahili word with multiple meanings, including origin, essence, and the fundamental principle of a culture. Similarly, many African cultures believe the proverb, ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ ASILI Center seeks to bring the essence and principles of African culture into practice through community-centered programs and practices.
our Mission
ASILI focuses on increasing opportunities for immigrant and refugee communities through youth-led and identified programs and action.
why?
Adapting to the US can be difficult for African immigrant and refugee youth. Managing the expectations to learn the culture and language of the US while also staying connected to their home cultures can create unique conflicts and challenges for youth. This is made worse by existing structural and systemic barriers meant to prevent them from successfully navigating their new environments. ASILI Center seeks to support youth in dismantling barriers by fostering spaces that promote equity, empowerment, and agency through collectivity.

Cultural and ethnic identity is central to the work of ASILI Center. Many African refugee youth are separated from their home cultures at a young age, leading to a disconnect that can impact their sense of self and belonging. ASILI Center strives to offer chances to reconnect youth participants with their rich cultural heritage, helping them build a strong identity rooted in their African origins.
